UTSA junior outside hitter McKenzie Adams has been named Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 22-28. This is her third WAC Player of the Week honor of the season.
The Schertz, Texas native averaged a WAC-best 6.14 kills on .367 hitting to go along with 4.71 digs, 0.71 assists, 0.57 blocks and 0.43 service aces per set to lead the Roadrunners to a pair of wins. She posted her WAC-leading 14th and 15th double-doubles of the season during the week. In a four-set win over Idaho, Adams tallied 25 kills, 19 digs, two assists, two blocks and a service ace. Two days later in a sweep of Seattle U, she hit .515 with 18 kills and only one error to go along with 14 digs, three assists, two blocks and two aces. For the season, Adams is averaging 4.19 kills, 3.74 digs and 0.60 blocks per set.
Other nominees included: Colleen King of Denver averaged 3.50 kills and 0.67 blocks per set on the week ... Idaho’s Allison (Walker) Baker averaged 4.29 kills, 2.29 digs and 0.71 blocks per set last week ... Caitlin Germany of Louisiana Tech averaged 1.57 kills and 0.71 blocks per set last week ... New Mexico State’s Desiree Scott averaged 2.67 kills on .560 hitting and 1.83 blocks per set as the Aggies went unbeaten on the week ... Mary Alice O’Reilly of San Jose State averaged 4.25 kills on .556 hitting to go along with 1.12 blocks per set as the Spartans went 2-0 on the week ... UT Arlington’s Shelby Dickson averaged 2.86 kills, 2.29 digs and 0.86 blocks per set last week ... Josselyn White of Utah State averaged 3.33 kills on .444 hitting, 3.50 digs and 0.67 blocks per set in helping the Aggies to a 2-0 mark on the week.
BAKER EXTENDS DOUBLE-DIGIT KILL STREAK TO 39 MATCHES
Idaho junior Allison (Walker) Baker has posted double-digit kills in 39 consecutive matches, dating back to Sept. 16, 2011. In her two-plus years as a Vandal, the outside hitter has had 10 or more kills in 70 of the 78 matches she has played, or 90 percent.
UTAH STATE’S WHITE SETS SCHOOL HITTING PERCENTAGE RECORD
Utah State senior outside hitter Josselyn White hit a school-record .812 with 13 kills and no errors in 16 attacks in leading USU to its third-straight sweep with a 3-0 win over Louisiana Tech last Saturday. The .812 is the highest by a WAC player this season, the highest by any WAC player since 2010, and the highest by a player in a WAC match since 2006.
NEW MEXICO STATE RANKS NATIONALLY IN ATTENDANCE
New Mexico State currently ranks 22nd nationally in attendance with an average of 1,688 fans per match. The Aggies have ranked in the top 25 in attendance every year since joining the WAC in 2005. NM State’s highest ranking as a member of the WAC came in 2005, when the Aggies were 11th with an average attendance of 2,075.
FIVE WAC PLAYERS RANK IN TOP 50 IN BLOCKING
Five WAC players – Denver’s Faimie Kingsley (4th, 1.67), Idaho’s Alyssa Schultz (35th, 1.34), New Mexico State’s Desiree Scott (43rd, 1.31), and Utah State’s Elle Brainard (16th, 1.48) and Kaitlyn Van Hoff (38th, 1.33) – currently rank in the top 50 nationally in blocks per set.
WAC STAT LEADERS
In team statistics, UTSA leads the WAC in assists (13.18), kills (14.31) and digs (18.67). Denver is tops in hitting percentage (.249), while Utah State leads the WAC in opponent hitting percentage (.157) and blocks (3.07), and San Jose State is tops in service aces (1.36).
Individually, Idaho’s Allison (Walker) Baker leads the WAC in kills (4.34) and points (4.85). Denver’s Faimie Kingsley is tops in hitting percentage (.384) and blocks (1.67), while San Jose State’s Michaela Leonard leads the league in assists (11.21). Kaytlyn Dill of Seattle U leads the WAC in service aces (0.41), while UTSA’s Annie Kunes is tops in digs (4.88).
In WAC matches, UTSA leads the league in assists (13.66), kills (14.66) and digs (19.53). Denver is tops in hitting percentage (.244), while New Mexico State leads the WAC in opponent hitting percentage (.134). Utah State is tops in blocks (3.01), while San Jose State is tops in service aces (1.47).
Individually, UTSA’s McKenzie Adams leads the WAC in kills (4.53) and points (5.18) in WAC matches, while Desiree Scott of New Mexico State is tops in hitting percentage (.451). San Jose State’s Leonard leads the league in assists (11.39), while Idaho’s Jenna Ellis is tops in service aces (0.43). Kingsley leads the WAC in blocks (1.84) and Kunes is tops in digs (5.36).
WAC TOURNAMENT TICKETS ON SALE NOW
Tickets for the 2012 WAC Volleyball Tournament are on sale now. The tournament will be held Nov. 19-21 at the Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas, on the campus of UTSA.
The 2012 tournament will consist of seven matches in three sessions (one session per day). Ticket prices are as follows:
All-Session: $21
Single-Session Adult: $10
Single-Session Senior/Youth: $7
Single-Session WAC Students: $5
