WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES
Two of Idaho's women runners, Hannah Kiser and Alycia Butterworth, competed as individuals in the Black Race at NCAA Pre-Nationals on Saturday ... the rest of the Vandal participated in the Inland Northwest Championships at Lewiston, Idaho ... as a team, the Idaho women took fourth at Lewiston, led by the seventh-place finish of junior Emily Paradis ... Idaho senior Barry Britt finished eighth in the NCAA Pre-Nationals Black Race ... the rest of the Vandal men competed at the Inland Northwest Championships at Lewiston, Idaho, where they finished seventh.
The Louisiana Tech men's cross country team competed at the Mississippi College Invitational ... LA Tech finished third in the race that included 24 teams ... LA Tech was led by Alwayne Green, who crossed the finish with a time of 26:52.34 ... Next up is the Demon Invite, before hosting the WAC Championship in Ruston.
New Mexico State Aggies
The New Mexico State University cross country team concluded its last regular season meet at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday, October 13 ... seniors Courtney and Camille Schultz finished first and second, respectively ... the women's team finished third as a team with a score of 111 ... the men's team finished eighth as a team with a score of 213 in the 8K ... senior Jonah Ruybalid finished first for NM State and 15th overall with a time of 24:28.8 ... the Aggies will have next week off before heading to Ruston, La., for the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27.
San Jose State Spartans
The San Jose State University men's cross country team came in ninth place out of 17 teams at the Bronco Invitational ... Matthew Stephens finished the 8K course in 26:10.8, a season-best, and came in 28th place ... San Jose State' women finished fifth out of 21 teams ... Rebecca Garcia led the Spartans for the second race in a row, turning in a 5K time of 18:30.3 ... San Jose State's next competition is the Western Athletic Conference Championship on October 27 in Ruston, La.
Seattle University Redhawks
Hannah Mittelstaedt, Jennifer Stolle, Sophie Curatilo, Madison Davis, Becca Lassere, and Elena Smith clinched their spots on the travel squad to Ruston, La ... the final two spots on the travel squad for the conference meet will be filled at the Beaver Invite ... thanks to five runners in the top 10, the Seattle University men cruised to the team title at the Emerald City Open ... Erik Barkhaus, Matthew McClement, Ryan Dennison, Graham Kinzel-Grubbs, Baxter Arguinchona, and Peter VanNuland clinched their spots on the team that will travel to Ruston, La., for the WAC Championships ... the rest of the squad head the Beaver Classic this Friday, Oct. 19.
University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks
The Maverick men have two team wins, one second-place finish and a sixth-place finish in fourth events, meaning that head-to-head this year the Mavericks have a 51-6-0 record ... for the first time this season UTA's two freshmen were not the top two finishers on the team ... the team had six runners break the 33-minute mark ... UTA is ranked eighth in the most recent USTFCCCA South Central regional rankings ... the women placed 17th among the 43 teams with a total of 541 points ... the Mavericks had two runners finish in the top 100 ...UTA moved up two spots to 13th in the most recent USTFCCCA South Central regional rankings ... UTA does not compete again until the WAC Championships on Oct. 27.
UTSA saw its three-meet winning streak come to an end at Saturday's 24th annual Chile Pepper Festival ... the Roadrunners placed 12th in the field of 34 men's teams ... Mike Medrano led the squad once again with his 44th-place performance (32:03.3/10k) ... the sophomore now has been UTSA's top finisher at all five of its meets this fall ... UTSA placed eighth out of 43 women's teams at the 24th annual Chile Pepper Festival ... Alyssa Diaz once again led the way with her 21st-place performance (21:51.9/6k) ... the junior now has paced the Roadrunners at each of their last four outings ... the Roadrunners will take next weekend off before returning to the course on Saturday, Oct. 27, for the WAC Championships in Ruston, La.
Texas State Bobcats
The Texas State women put on their best team performance of the season as it won the Concordia Invite ... led by the upperclassmen, the Bobcats' top five runners all placed in the top eight individually ... the men's team finished third ... freshman Tyrone Jackson was the top finisher for the Cats with a time of 16:41 for tenth-place in the 5K.
Utah State Aggies
The Utah State women finished fourth out of 26 teams in the unseeded portion of the races this past weekend at the NCAA Pre-Nationals ... senior Alex Litzsinger led the Utah State women as the top finisher for the fourth-straight meet ... she also led all WAC runners with a third-place finish (21:15.4) out of 243 runners ... USU's men finished 30th out of the top 40 teams in the seeded portion of the races this past weekend ... Kyle McKenna clocked in with a time of 24:03.9 in the 8K seeded men's race ... he competed against 272 runners from 40 different Division I teams ... The Aggies will next run at the WAC Championships in Ruston, La.
Utah State's Kyle McKenna and New Mexico State's Courtney Schultz Have Been Named the Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Athletes of the Week
Utah State's Kyle McKenna and New Mexico State's Courtney Schultz have been named the Western Athletic Conference men's and women's Cross Country Athletes of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 8-14.
McKenna, a junior from Farmington, Utah (Viewmont H.S.), was both the top finisher for the USU men and the top finisher from the WAC with his 51st-place finish at the NCAA Pre-National meet at E.P 'Tom' Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky., last weekend. McKenna clocked in with a time of 24:03.9 in the 8K seeded men's race as he competed against 272 runners from 40 different Division I teams, including No. 8 Oregon and No. 5 BYU. He also has been the top Aggie finisher at all four meets in 2012.
Schultz, a senior from Cloudcroft, N.M. (Cloudcroft H.S.), finished first overall for all scoring individuals with a time of 17:00.5 in the women's 5K at the Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif., on Saturday, Oct. 13. This is the second time this season Schultz has finished first overall and the fourth time she has finished first for N.M. State. Schultz assisted the Aggies to a third-place finish, defeating nationally ranked PAC-12 schools Colorado and UCLA.

The 2012 WAC Cross Country Championship travels to Ruston, Louisiana. This year's championships will be hosted by Louisiana Tech University and will take place at the Lincoln Parish Park Course on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Utah State men and Idaho women claimed the championships last year.

The 2012 Cross Country Regionals will be held at nine sites throughout the country, Friday, Nov. 9. WAC teams will be represented in three locations. The West Region will be held in Seattle, Wash., (Washington). The Mountain Region will be held in Fort Collins, Colo., (Colorado State), while the South Central Regional (Arkansas) will take place in Fayetteville, Ark.
