DENVER - North Dakota's Caitlin Quon and New Mexico State's Jaymee Porter have been named the Western Athletic Conference Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Oct. 8-14.
Quon, a freshman from Richmond, British Columbia (A.R. MacNeill Sec. School), started her collegiate career on a nice note, winning the 1000 meter freestyle in 10:28.21, nearly nine seconds ahead of the closest competition in Friday night's meet. Quon continued her nice collegiate start on Saturday by winning a pair of events. She started the meet with a win in the 1650 freestyle, touching in 17:38.40, more than 13 seconds better than the field. She also won the 400 IM with ease, clocking a 4:34.54 time. Quon also recorded second-place finishes in the 500 freestyle (5:10.54) and the 200 IM (2:11.06).
Porter, a junior from Vancouver, British Colombia (R.E. Mountain), swept the diving events in the season-opening win over Air Force. She won her first two collegiate events with a meet-best 219.08 points on the 1-meter boards. Porter tallied a 223.05 on the 3-meter event.
Other swimmers nominated: Denver sophomore Samantha Corea, Idaho sophomore Rachel Millet, New Mexico State junior Tricia Kiss, Northern Arizona junior Jordan Burnes, San Jose State senior Marisa DeWames and Seattle U senior Kevlyn Richards.
