Texas State senior setter Caleigh McCorquodale has been named Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 27-Sept. 2. This is the first-ever WAC Player of the Week honor for McCorquodale.
The Cypress, Texas (Cypress Woods HS) native averaged 7.21 assists, 3.29 digs, 0.86 kills and 0.43 blocks per set as she led Texas State to a perfect 4-0 record last week. McCorquodale began the week with her second double-double of the season, finishing with 20 assists, 20 digs and four blocks in a five-set win over Sam Houston State. She was then was named the Lamar Invitational MVP after leading the team to sweeps of South Carolina State, Tulane and Lamar, including the team's first win over the Cardinals in Beaumont since 2004. McCorquodale guided the Bobcat offense to a .261 team hitting percentage for the tournament, where she averaged 9.00 assists, 2.89 digs and 1.00 kills per set. She posted her second double-double of the week against Tulane, finishing with 33 assists and 13 digs.
Other nominees included: Faimie Kingsley of Denver averaged 2.10 kills non .370 hitting and 0.9 blocks per set at the Bluejay Invitational... Idaho's Allison (Walker) Baker was named to the all-tournament team at the UCSB Fall Invitational after averaging 4.36 kills, 3.00 digs and 0.86 blocks per set ... Desiree Scott of New Mexico State was named to the all-tournament team at the La Quinta Invitational after averaging 1.75 kills on .389 hitting and 1.08 blocks per set as the Aggies went 2-1 ... San Jose State's Krista Miller averaged 3.78 kills on .459 hitting, 3.00 digs, 0.89 blocks and 0.50 service aces per set as the Spartans went 2-1 at the Lonestar Showdown ... Sarah Jaeckel of Seattle U averaged 4.20 kills and 2.00 digs per set as the Redhawks went 2-1 on the week ... UT Arlington's Shelby Dickson averaged 3.00 kills and 3.82 digs per set last week ... Brittney Malloy of UTSA averaged 2.60 kills on .437 hitting and 1.27 blocks per set as the Roadrunners went 3-1 on the week ... Utah State's Rachel Orr was named to the all-tournament team at the Aztec Invitational after averaging 3.20 kills on .364 hitting, 0.90 digs and 0.5 blocks per set as the Aggies went 2-1.
NUMEROUS WAC PLAYERS NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMS IN SECOND WEEKEND
The WAC had 17 players named to all-tournament teams last weekend. Caleigh McCorquodale, Ashlee Hilbun and Alexandra Simms of Texas State were named to the all-tournament team at the Lamar Invitational, with McCorquodale earning MVP honors. UTSA also had three players earn honors, as Brandy Huskey, Erin Foley and Kylie Schott were named to the UTSA Classic all-tournament team. Meredith Hays and Desiree Scott of New Mexico State were named to the La Quinta Invitational all-tournament squad, while Hanah Blume and Mary Alice O'Reilly of San Jose State earned Lonestar Showdown all-tournament honors. Utah State also had two honorees at the Aztec Challenge in Elle Brainard and Rachel Orr. Denver's Colleen King was named to the Bluejay Invitational all-tournament team, while Allison (Walker) Baker of Idaho earned all-tournament honors at the UCSB Fall Invitational. Rounding out the honorees were Louisiana Tech's Emily Maher (Lamar Invitational), Seattle U's Sarah Jaeckel (Cougar Challenge) and UT Arlington's Amanda Welsh (UIC Invitational).
TOP STAT LEADERS
Two weeks into the season, New Mexico State's Meredith Hays leads the WAC in points (5.42) and service aces (0.46) per set, while Idaho's Allison (Walker) Baker is tops in kills (4.69). Utah State's Elle Brainard leads the conference in hitting percentage (.440) and is tied for the lead in blocks (1.43) with teammate Kaitlyn Van Hoff. Idaho's Janelle Chow is tops in digs (4.78), while San Jose State's Michaela Leonard leads the league in assists (11.81).
DENVER PIONEERS (3-3, 0-0 WAC)
Denver went 1-2 at the Bluejay Invitational last weekend, falling to No. 21 Kansas State (16-25, 15-25, 19-25) and host Creighton (23-25, 10-25, 25-18, 15-25), and defeating Syracuse (25-17, 25-18, 25-13) ... Colleen King was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 2.30 kills, 0.50 digs and 0.50 blocks per set over the three matches ... Denver ranks third in the WAC in opponent hitting percentage (.157), fourth in hitting percentage (.210), and fifth in assists (11.16), kills (12.05), blocks (2.32) and service aces (1.16) ... Faimie Kingsley ranks third in the WAC in blocks (1.37) and fifth in hitting percentage (.356) ... Hannah Safari ranks fifth in the WAC in service aces (0.37), while Lyndi Johnson is sixth in digs (3.63) and Frances Carroll is seventh in assists (8.95) ... DU boasts the highest single-match hitting percentage in the WAC this season (.440 vs. Virginia) ... The Pioneers travel to Washington, D.C., to play in the Pentagon Tournament this weekend, where they will face The Citadel, Navy and Army.
IDAHO VANDALS (2-5, 0-0 WAC)
Idaho fell in five sets (27-25, 23-25, 18-25, 25-16, 9-15) at Cal Poly last Thursday, then fell to UC Santa Barbara (11-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 12-15) and Northeastern (25-22, 18-25, 24-26, 24-26) at the UCSB Invitational last weekend ... Allison (Walker) Baker earned all-tournament team honors after averaging 4.78 kills, 3.33 digs and 0.67 blocks over the two matches ... On Monday, the Vandals fell in four sets at Cal State Northridge (26-28, 17-25, 25-21, 20-25) ... Baker has posted double-doubles in all seven matches this season ... As a team, Idaho ranks fourth in the WAC in assists (11.78), kills (12.53) and digs (16.12) ... Baker leads the league in kills (4.69) and is second in points (5.30), while Janelle Chow is tops in digs (4.78) ... Alyssa Schultz ranks fourth in the conference in hitting percentage (.372) and sixth in blocks (1.22) ... LOUISIANA TECH LADY TECHSTERS (0-6, 0-0 WAC)
The Lady Techsters went 0-3 at the Lamar Invitational last weekend, falling to the host Cardinals (14-25, 20-25, 25-18, 14-25), Tulane (22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 16-25) and South Carolina State (25-17, 22-25, 20-25, 22-25) ... Emily Maher was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 2.00 kills, 1.83 digs and 0.75 blocks per set ... Freshman Dalane Guidry posted a career-high .556 hitting percentage against Tulane ... The Lady Techsters rank fourth in the WAC in blocks per set (2.36) ... Caitlin Germany ranks seventh in the league in blocks per set (1.21), while Stephany Salas is eighth in digs per set (3.50) and Maria Coelho is eighth in assists (8.09) ... Louisiana Tech hosts Grambling State on Wednesday, then travels to Hammond, La., for the Southeastern Lion Classic this weekend, where it will face UT-Pan American, Southern, Weber State and Southeastern Louisiana.
NEW MEXICO STATE AGGIES (5-1, 0-0 WAC)
The Aggies went 2-1 at their own La Quinta Invitational last weekend, defeating Cincinnati (17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-7) and Drake (25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-18), and falling in four sets to Northwestern (21-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-27) ... Meredith Hays and Desiree Scott were named to the all-tournament team. Hays averaged 4.08 kills, 1.58 digs, 0.67 service aces and 0.50 blocks per set, while Scott averaged 1.75 kills and 1.08 blocks per set ... The Aggies lead the WAC in service aces (1.50) and hitting percentage (.241), rank second in assists (12.38) and blocks (2.56), and third in kills (13.46) ... Hays leads the WAC in points (5.42) and service aces (0.46), and ranks second in kills (4.67) ... Scott ranks seventh in hitting percentage (.333) and eighth in blocks (1.21) ... Ciara Brown ranks 10th in the WAC in assists (6.36) ... The Aggies travel to Fort Collins, Colo., this weekend for the Rams Classic, where they will face Florida International, No. 12 Pepperdine and host Colorado State.
SAN JOSE STATE SPARTANS (3-3, 0-0 WAC)
The Spartans went 2-1 at the Lonestar Showdown last weekend, sweeping Northwestern State (25-18, 25-12, 25-23) and UT-Pan American (25-23, 25-16, 25-17), and falling to host Texas Tech (22-25, 26-28, 25-27) ... Hanah Blume and Mary Alice O'Reilly were named to the all-tournament team. Blume averaged 2.89 kills and 5.33 digs, while O'Reilly averaged 3.67 kills and 0.56 blocks over the three matches ... Krista Miller hit a WAC season-high .765 against Northwestern State ... Miller also had a career-high 15 kills to go with 10 digs against UT-Pan American for her first double-double of the season ... San Jose State leads the WAC in opponent hitting percentage (.145), assists (13.00), kills (14.00) and digs (19.05) ... Freshman Michaela Leonard leads the WAC in assists (11.81), while Blume is second in digs (4.52) and sixth in kills (3.29) ... Kiely Pieper is fourth in the WAC in digs (4.10), while Alex Akana is fourth in blocks (1.35) ... San Jose State plays in the Boise State Tournament this weekend, where it will face UC Irvine, Southern Utah and the host Broncos.
SEATTLE U REDHAWKS (4-3, 0-0 WAC)
Seattle University went 2-1 at the Cougar Challenge last weekend, defeating Weber State (23-25, 31-29, 22-25, 25-20, 15-11) and Alabama State (25-7, 25-14, 25-15), and falling to host Washington State (8-25, 13-25, 16-25) ... Sarah Jaeckel was named to the all-tournament team after leading Seattle U in kills in all three matches, finishing with career highs of 24 kills and 16 digs against Weber State. It was Jaeckel's eighth career double-double, but her first since Nov. 19, 2010 ... Setter Jacquie Brice posted a career-high 48 assists against Weber State ... The Redhawks gave up just 36 total points to Alabama State, the fewest in a single match in program history since rally scoring was instituted ... As a team, Seattle U ranks second in the WAC in service aces (1.19) ... Jaeckel ranks third in the WAC in kills (3.57), while teammate Kaytlyn Dill is third in service aces (0.38) and seventh in kills (3.17) ... The Redhawks play at No. 7 Washington on Thursday and host Long Beach State on Saturday.
UT ARLINGTON MAVERICKS (3-5, 0-0 WAC)
UT Arlington fell in five sets to North Texas (26-24, 21-25, 25-19, 17-25, 10-15) last Tuesday, then went 1-2 at the UIC Invitational last weekend, defeating host UIC (26-24, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23), and falling to Eastern Michigan (27-25, 19-25, 25-23, 17-25, 9-15) and IPFW (19-25, 23-25, 18-25) ... Amanda Welsh was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 9.75 assists, 1.92 digs, 0.83 kills and 0.33 service aces over the three matches ... On Monday, the Mavericks were swept by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (14-25, 23-25, 22-25) ... The Mavericks rank third in the WAC in digs (16.23) ... Shelby Dickson ranks fifth in the league in both kills per set (3.40) and digs per set (3.93), and eighth in points per set (3.67) ... Welsh ranks third in the WAC in assists per set (9.50), while Charmaine Whitmore is fifth in blocks (1.24) ... UTA hosts the UTA Maverick Classic this weekend, where it will face Marist, Northwestern State and Southern Mississippi.
UTSA ROADRUNNERS (5-2, 0-0 WAC)
UTSA fell in four sets to Rice (17-25, 14-25, 25-22, 11-25) last Tuesday, then won the UTSA Classic after beating Belmont twice (25-17, 25-18, 25-15) and (25-20, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22), and edging UTEP in five sets (23-25, 25-19, 25-11, 16-25, 15-13) ... Brandy Huskey, Erin Foley and Kylie Schott were named to the all-tournament team. Huskey averaged 11.42 assists and 2.42 digs per set, Foley averaged 0.86 assists, 0.86 digs and 0.57 service aces per set, and Schott averaged 2.33 kills on .519 hitting and 0.50 blocks per set ... Brittney Malloy posted career highs of 18 kills and a .654 hitting percentage vs. UTEP ... Dempsey Thornton posted a double-double of a career-high 24 kills and 11 digs in the second match against Belmont ... UTSA is off to the program's best start since 1992 ... Malloy ranks fourth all-time at UTSA in total blocks (327) ... The Roadrunners play at Houston on Friday in their only match this week.

UTAH STATE AGGIES (5-2, 0-0 WAC)
Utah State went 2-1 at the Aztec Invitational last weekend, defeating Montana (22-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-15, 15-5) and Sacred Heart (25-19, 26-28, 25-19, 25-21), before falling to host San Diego State (17-25, 25-23, 22-25, 18-25) ... Elle Brainard and Rachel Orr were named to the all-tournament team. Brainard averaged 1.77 kills and 1.46 blocks per set, while Orr averaged 3.151 kills on .364 hitting, 0.85 digs and 0.54 blocks over the three matches ... Josselyn White now has 271 career total blocks, needing just eight more to break into the USU career top 10 list ... As a team, Utah State leads the WAC in blocks (3.09), and ranks second in hitting percentage (.226) and opponent hitting percentage (.156) ... Brainard leads the WAC in hitting percentage (.440) and blocks (1.43) ... Ashlan Rogers ranks second in the conference in service aces (0.43) and ninth in digs (3.43) ... The Aggies travel to Manhattan, Kan., for the Kansas State Invitational this weekend, where they will face Saint Mary's and the No. 22 Wildcats.
