FAIRFAX, Va. – Three San Jose State student-athletes were honored as 2012 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars, as selected by Diverse Issues in Higher Education.
Women’s basketball player Sara Plavljanin and women’s gymnasts Aubrey Lee and Katie Valleau were honored by the magazine. Plavljanin finished her senior season averaging 13.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 30 starts. She is fourth on the San Jose State career three-pointers made list with 61. Plavljanin is a San Jose State Dean’s Scholar, Academic all-WAC honoree and San Jose State Scholar Athlete.
Lee had her senior season cut short by an injury in mid-February.  She continued to persevere and was a constant presence in the gym encouraging her teammates. Lee was voted by her teammates as the Most Inspirational Gymnast this season. She is one of five gymnasts to hold the beam record at 9.900. Lee is a San Jose State Scholar Athlete and an Academic all-WAC honoree.
Valleau was a first team all-WAC honoree on the floor this season after tying for second at the conference meet. She competed on vault, beam and floor for the Spartans and won the floor title in a meet against California and Maryland this past season. Valleau is an Academic all-WAC honoree and San Jose State Scholar Athlete.
The three were selected from more than 650 nominated student-athletes from NCAA and NAIA schools. To be nominated, a student-athlete needed at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, be in good standing, have campus and community participation and be an ethnic or minority student.
San Jose State was the only school from the WAC to have student-athletes honored.
