In the April 10 ITA rankings, Fresno State is the lone ranked WAC team at No. 34.
Individually, the WAC has four singles players ranked in the top 125. Remi Boutillier of Fresno State is the top-ranked WAC player, at No. 25, while his teammate Francis Alcantara is No. 51. Hawai’i’s Jonathan Brooklyn checks in at No. 111. Wessim Derbel of Nevada garnered a ranking of No. 113.
No. 34 Fresno State went 1-0 last weekend, defeating UC Davis 6-1.
This week, the Bulldogs will travel to face No. 53 Cal Poly on Sunday.
Hawai’i fell to No. 61 New Mexico, 7-0, on Monday, in the first of four duals on its road trip.
This week, Hawai’i will face UNLV on Tuesday, before travelling to Logan, Utah for two WAC duals. UH will play Idaho on Friday and Utah State on Saturday, the final duals for Hawai’i before the WAC Championships, which take place April 27-29 in Las Cruces, N.M.
Last week, Idaho went 1-0, defeating Northern Arizona by a score of 7-0.
This week, the Vandals travel to Logan, Utah for two conference matches on Friday. Idaho battles Hawai’i in the morning and Utah State in the afternoon. These will be the Vandals final duals before the WAC Championships, which take place April 27-29 in Las Cruces, N.M.
Last week, Nevada went 1-1. The Wolf Pack defeated Portland State, 7-0, on Sunday, but fell to New Mexico State, 4-3, on Thursday. The loss drops Nevada to 1-3 in conference play.
This week, the Wolf Pack are off. Nevada returns to action on April 20 against Utah State.
NEW MEXICO STATE
Last week, New Mexico State went 2-0. The Aggies defeated Nevada 4-3, in a conference dual on Friday and then topped Portland State, 7-0, on Saturday. Both matches took place in Reno.
This week, the Aggies are off. NMSU plays next against Western New Mexico on April 18.
Last week, Utah State was off.
This week, the Aggies host two conference duals. USU hosts Idaho on Friday and Hawai’i on Saturday.
WAC MEN’S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (March 26-April 1)
DENVER – Nevada’s Wessim Derbel has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, for the week of April 2-8.
Derbel, as senior from La Marsa, Tunisia (Lycee Sportif el Menzah), went undefeated last weekend, helping Nevada to a sweep of Portland State and a 1-1 record. He came from behind to defeat New Mexico State’s Matej Stakne, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, in a conference dual and soundly defeated Portland State’s Roman Marqoulis 6-0, 6-0. He partnered with Fernando Sunago to go 2-0 in doubles play as well. Derbel is now three singles wins away from tying the single-season record at Nevada (27, Laurent Garcin – 2007-08). With two matches remaining in the regular season and WAC tournament play still to come, Derbel is six matches from tying Garcin’s career mark of 72 wins.
