WAC TEAM-BY-TEAM NOTES

Denver Pioneers (14-6, 0-0 WAC)

Denver is currently No. 18 in the nation ... the Pioneers improved to 14-6 on the season ... Denver will participate in its first WAC Championships this weekend in Logan, Utah ... the Pioneers have tallied a 196 or higher in four of the last five meets ... the Crimson and Gold are in the top 30 in all four events, and are first in the WAC in all five categories.

Sacramento State Hornets (9-8, 1-2 WAC)
The team score of 195.275 at the SJSU Tri Meet was a season high for Sacramento State and is tied for the fifth highest in school history … McCartney’s all-around score set the school record ... the previous mark of 39.350 had been held by Marina Borisova (twice) and Binta Coleman … since the return of gymnastics to the WAC, Sacramento State has finished first twice and second once ... the Hornets’ first team title came at Utah State.

San Jose State Spartans (12-6, 3-0 WAC)
San Jose State scored its second-highest team score in school history with a 195.850 against Sacramento State and UC Davis ... at the meet, the team had the second-highest beam score in school history with a 49.075 and the sixth-highest floor score with a 49.225 ... Thomasina Wallace won her 10th all-around title of the season with the second-highest score in school history wit a 39.550 ... she won the bars with a 9.900, beam with a 9.875 and floor with a career-best 9.950.

Southern Utah Thunderbirds (4-11, 1-2 WAC)
Southern Utah completed in two meets this past week ... Southern Utah’s score (195.875) against Boise State was a season high and the team score on beam (49.300) tied for the fourth best in school history ... the T-Birds defeated BYU on the road last week ... freshman Jamie Armijo set or tied career-best marks on all three events on which she competed against Boise State ... Alyssa Click tallied the third-best bars mark in school history with a 9.925 in both meets she competed in last week.

Utah State Aggies  (5-12, 1-2 WAC)

Friday’s meet against No. 18 ranked Arizona was USU’s fifth meet this season against a ranked opponent and all have been in progressive order, and all five have been in the top 20 at the time when USU faced them, as the Aggies have met No. 5 Utah (Jan. 13), No. 10 Oklahoma (Jan. 21), No. 13 Boise State (Jan. 27) and No. 16 Boise State (March 2) before No. 18 Arizona on Friday ... Paige Jones was the top Aggie placer on the night, tying for second on bars with a 9.850, Friday in the quad meet at No. 18 Arizona.

WAC NOTES

SAN JOSE STATE CLAIMS REGULAR SEASON TITLE
With its 195.850-195.275 victory over Sacramento State Friday night, San Jose State wrapped up its conference regular season slate with a perfect 3-0 mark to claim the 2012 WAC regular season title. Sacramento State, Southern Utah and Utah State each finished with identical 1-2 records. Denver was not competing for a regular season title this year as it did not compete in a regular season WAC schedule.

SAN JOSE STATE’S WALLACE AND SOUTHERN UTAH’S CLICK NAMED WAC GYMNASTS OF THE WEEK
San Jose State’s Thomasina Wallace and Southern Utah’s Alyssa Click have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week and Specialist of the Week, respectively, for the week of March 12-18.

Wallace, a senior from Pomona, Calif. (Diamond Ranch HS) won her 10th all-around title of the season with the second-highest score in school history with a 39.550. She won three of the four individual meet titles at the SJSU tri meet. She won on bars with a 9.900, on beam with a 9.875 and on floor with a career-best 9.950.

Click, a junior from Vancouver, Wash. (Skyview HS) recorded a career-best 9.925 on beam last week to win the individual title in the event in a dual meet against Boise State. Click’s 9.925 is the third-best mark on beam in SUU history. She repeated her performance in a dual meet at Brigham Young on Monday.

Other Gymnast of the Week Nominees: Denver sophomore Moriah Martin tallied a 39.450 en route to winning her fourth all-around title of the season in a quad meet … Southern Utah freshman Jamie Armijo set or tied career-best marks on all three events in which she competed last week against Boise State … Utah State sophomore Paige Jones tied for second on bars with a 9.850 in a quad meet at Arizona.

Other Specialist of the Week Nominees
: Denver sophomore Melodie Pulgarin Linero won a share of the bars title in a quad meet last week with a 9.900 … Sacramento State freshman Kalliah McCartney set a career high 9.875 to help win vault in a three-team meet … Utah State freshman Samantha Wagner was the top Aggie on beam, scoring a career-best 9.800 to tie for fifth in a quad meet at Arizona.
