Verizon Wireless WAC Tennis Players of the Week Announced

DENVER – Boise State’s Harry Skinner and Idaho’s Barbara Maciocha have been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Tennis Players of the Week for Feb. 1-7. This is the first-ever honor for both.

Skinner, a senior from London, England, helped the Broncos to a 2-0 record last week in his debut at Boise State after transferring from Arizona State. He and doubles partner James Meredith started off the week with an 8-6 win over Utah State’s Jakob Asplund and Bryan Marchant in the No. 1 match, 8-6. He followed it up with a key come-from-behind win over the Aggies’ Sven Poslusny, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 position. In a 7-0 win over Weber State, Skinner teamed with Meredith at the No. 1 spot to beat Sascha Kiehne and Simon Unger, 8-7 (10-8). He also earned a straight-set singles victory at the No. 2 spot.

Maciocha, a junior from Szczecin, Poland, was pivotal for the Vandals last week, going undefeated in both singles and doubles play as the team went 3-0 on the week. Playing at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, she picked up three straight-set wins, including the match-clincher against Eastern Washington. In doubles, Maciocha and partner Silvia Irimescu went 3-0 at Nos. 2 and 3.

Other male nominees included: Fresno State’s David Ayoun remained undefeated through the spring, picking up a pair of wins at No. 5 singles … Leo Rosenberg of Hawai’i went 3-0 at No. 4 singles and 1-2 at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles last week … Idaho’s Stanislav Glukhov went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles play as Idaho went 2-1 on the week … Amit Maharaj of Utah State went 2-0 at No. 5 singles and 1-1 at No. 2 doubles last week.

Other female nominees included: Boise State’s Pichittra Thongdach picked up two wins in the Broncos’ 5-2 victory over No. 60 Colorado … Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State remained undefeated in the spring by picking up a pair of wins against Saint Mary’s … Hawai’i’s Natasha Zorec went 1-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles as the Rainbow Wahine picked up their first win of the year … Maria Mizyuk of Nevada went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles last week … San Jose State’s Chau Truong picked up wins at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles in a win over Cal State Stanislaus.
