DENVER – Boise State’s Troy Merritt and San Jose State’s Erica Moston have been named the Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Month for September.
Merritt, a senior from Fridley, Minn. (Winona State), won two individual titles and tied for third in another tournament last month for the Broncos. He won the Giustina Memorial Classic in Corvallis, Ore., with a 12-under 204 and then set a school record for a two-round score with a 10-under 134 in winning the Purple and Red Invitational in Ogden, Utah. His performance in the latter event helped the Broncos win their first team title in two seasons. Last week, he shot a 2-under 211 at the Shootout at Angel Park in Las Vegas. Merritt birdied six of the final seven holes to finish in a tie for third place at the event.
Moston, a junior from Belmont, Calif. (Notre Dame HS), had two top-20 finishes last month. At the Ron Moore Invitational in Highlands Ranch, Colo., Moston finished in third place with a 3-over 219 to help the Spartans to a fourth place team finish. Earlier in the month, she competed in the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., and tied for 14th place with a 6-over 222. San Jose State finished in fifth place in the team competition, the highest of the four WAC schools that played in the event.
