Men's Recaps

Mercer 70, Utah State 67

LOGAN, Utah - (USU Media Relations) After an 8-0 run gave Utah State its first lead of the second half, Mercer stopped the Aggies' rally to regain the lead, and held on for a wild, 70-67, win Wednesday night in the CollegeInsider.com Men's Basketball Postseason Tournament Championship game at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in a nationally televised thriller on Fox College Sports.

The Bears hit 7-of-8 free throws in the game's final 23 seconds and USU senior guard Brockeith Pane's game-tying three-point attempt came up just short at the buzzer to end the Aggies' historic postseason run. Utah State had won a school-record four postseason games to reach Wednesday's title game, but Mercer made history of its own with its fifth-straight win to improve to 27-11 overall. USU ends with a 21-16 mark, as the Aggies remain one of five schools with 13-consecutive 21-win seasons in the country, joined by Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas and Syracuse.

Mercer's Langston Hall was named the CIT MVP, as he netted 16 points to go with six rebounds and four assists Wednesday night. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Justin Cecil and Travis Smith, as Smith netted a game-high 17 points, including hitting a jumper and a deep three-pointer in the final minute and a half, while Cecil tallied six points and six rebounds.

Three Aggies earned all-tournament honors, as Pane scored 10 points and dished out five assists, and was joined by fellow senior, forward Morgan Grim, who had nine points and six rebounds, as Pane and Grim were playing their final games in a USU uniform and are the Aggies' only two seniors. Sophomore guard Preston Medlin joined the senior duo in all-tournament award collecting, tallying 14 points and five rebounds, hitting two three-pointers.
