WAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week Announced

DENVER Hawai‘i senior Tanya Smith has been named the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 17-23.


Smith, from Sydney, Australia (Jannali HS), recorded back-to-back double-doubles for the Rainbow Wahine, as they went 1-1 at the Women of Troy Classic in Los Angeles.


Smith started off the tournament with a season-high 21 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and added six assists and two steals. In the second game, Smith had 13 points and 13 rebounds, and added three steals.


On the week, the senior center averaged 17.0 points, 12.5 rebounds and three assists in 35.5 minutes per game, over the two days. Smith’s two double-doubles gives her seven on the season. She was named to the Women of Troy Basketball Classic All-Tournament team for her efforts, marking the third All-Tournament team that she has been named to this season.


Other nominees included: Fresno State guard Tierre Wilson scored a game-high 20 points in an 81-58 win over Sacramento State last week ... Idaho guard Sara Dennehy pulled down 10 rebounds as the Vandals held Colorado State to a WAC-record eight field goals in the team’s first win of the season ... New Mexico State senior Sherell Neal recorded her 29th career double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds against rival New Mexico ... Utah State guard Taylor Richards scored 17 points to go along with four assists and three steals in a win over Saint Mary’s.
