Boise State Broncos (13-6-4, 5-3-0 WAC) Boise State’s Erica Parks scored her third goal of the tournament in the 23rd minute to lift Boise State to a 1-0 victory over Nevada, claiming the 2009 Western Athletic Conference Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament ... the freshman from Nampa, Idaho, scored in all three of the Broncos’ tournament wins earning her the tournament MVP honors for the outstanding effort ... a Boas Complex record crowd of 1,223 watched as the Broncos won their sixth straight to improve to 13-6-4 on the year and increase their program record for victories ... they also tied the school record for shutouts in a season with their ninth of the year and second in a row. Fresno State Bulldogs (6-13-0, 4-4-0 WAC) Fresno State’s season came to an end in the first round of the 2009 WAC Tournament with a 2-1 loss to host Boise State ... the Bulldogs finished the season 6-13 ... junior Janna Sadowitz scored the equalizing goal in the 88th minute ... Revel launched a free kick down field and Sadowitz beat the defender ... she then took on the goalkeeper one versus one and scored her third goal of the season ... Revel finished the game with eight saves ... junior Claudia Cardenas led the team in points and goals with 10 and five, respectively. Hancock ended the season with the most shots on the team with 40. Revel had 83 saves and four shutouts on the season.
Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine (7-11-1, 3-5-0 WAC) UH went 1-1 the week of Oct. 26 to wrap up its season … the team fell 2-1 to Boise State before defeating Idaho 3-2 … Britta Bourne scored all three goals in UH’s season-finale win at Idaho … Bourne became just the fifth player in school history to record a hat trick … Bourne ended the season with 10 goals and 23 points, to lead the team … Chelsea Deptula played in all 180:00 minutes, taking four shots, with one on goal … senior Ambree Ako had two assists vs. Idaho to move into second on the all-time UH career list with 21. Idaho Vandals (9-10-0, 2-6-0 WAC) Idaho dropped its final game of the season, 3-2 at home to Hawai‘i on Nov. 1 ... for the first 45 minutes of Sunday’s game against Hawai’i, Idaho’s women played some of their best soccer of the season, but second-half lapses spelled disaster for the Vandals in a 3-2 loss to Hawai’i on Senior Day ... even with the loss, the Vandals still put together their best team finish since 2001 and the best single-season turnaround in team history at eight wins ... entering the weekend, Idaho’s eight-win improvement was the best in the NCAA so far this season.
LA Tech Lady Techsters (12-7-1, 1-7-0 WAC) Louisiana Tech ended the best season in school history with a 5-0 loss to Nevada on Nov. 1 ...Tech finished with a school-record 12 wins and their first-ever WAC win coming against New Mexico State ... for the season, the Lady Techsters broke four career goalkeeping records and three individual career records. Team single-season records broken were goals (54), assists (45) and points (153) ... team single-game records broken were goals (12), assists (12) and points (36) ... other single-season records broken were goals (11) and points (24) by Rachel King, wins (11) and shutouts (6) by Cat Buchanan and assists (6) by Scotti Culton, Kat McCullough and Kiva Gresham ... Tech loses just two seniors off of this year’s squad.
Nevada Wolf Pack (10-12-0, 5-3-0 WAC) Nevada ended its season with a 1-0 loss in the championship match of the 2009 WAC Soccer Tournament ... the Pack went 2-1 at the tournament with wins over New Mexico State and top-seeded San Jose State ... Nevada finishes the season with a 10-12-0 overall mark ... Natalie Ratnavira led the Pack during the season with a team-high five goals and 12 points ... Cristen Drummond ranked second offensively with three goals ... Kesia Broome was Nevada’s assist leader with three ... Marie Cove led the defensive effort with 1327:04 minutes in goal with 90 saves and a pair of shutouts.
New Mexico State Aggies (9-9-1, 4-3-1 WAC) New Mexico State concluded its inaugural season in the 2009 WAC Tournament, Thursday, Nov. 5, in Boise, Idaho ... the No. 4 seed Nevada edged the No. 5 seed Aggies, 1-0, at Boas Complex ... NM State finished its remarkable season with a 9-9-1 record ... Nevada took a quick 1-0 lead against Nevada when junior midfielder Vanessa Mann scored on a ball that was defected off an Aggie in the first minute of the match ... NM State tried to tie the match as a shot that grazed high off goalkeeper Marie Cove’s fingertips.
San Jose State Spartans (11-6-3, 5-1-2 WAC) WAC regular-season champion San Jose State lost 2-1 to Nevada in a WAC Tournament semifinal game ... the loss ends a memorable season for the Spartans, who eclipsed numerous school records under the guidance of WAC Coach of the Year, Jeff Leightman ... Leightman led the team to its first winning campaign since 1999 and the first WAC regular-season crown since it joined the conference for the 1996 season ... the Spartans, who were projected to finish sixth in the conference, also ran off a school-record 14-match unbeaten streak ... SJSU broke team marks for longest win streak (six games) and single-season WAC wins (five).
Utah State State Aggies (10-9-2, 5-2-1 WAC) Battling both the conditions and third-seeded Boise State, the second-seeded Utah State soccer team fell to the Broncos, 1-0, in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament ... this is the second-straight season that the Aggies and the Broncos have met in the semifinals ... last season, Utah State defeated Boise State, 1-0, on a goal by forward Lauren Hansen ... this season, it was the Broncos with the 1-0 advantage ... the Aggies say goodbye to three seniors who helped put Utah State soccer on the map in defenders Sydne Garner, Lindsey Smart and forward Erin Salmon ... Smart will end her career as the all-time USU leader in matches started (84) and assists (15).
WAC NOTES
BOISE STATE WINS FIRST-EVER WAC TOURNAMENT TITLE Boise State’s Erica Parks scored her third goal of the tournament in the 23rd minute to lift Boise State to a 1-0 victory over Nevada, claiming the 2009 Western Athletic Conference Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The freshman from Nampa, Idaho, scored in all three of the Broncos’ tournament wins earning her the tournament MVP honors for the outstanding effort.
A Boas Complex record crowd of 1,223 watched as the Broncos won their sixth straight to improve to 13-6-4 on the year and increase their program record for victories. They also tied the school record for shutouts in a season with their ninth of the year and second in a row.
Boise State opened the match fast taking control of the tempo early on. The Broncos took six shots in the first 12 minutes compared to two for the Wolf Pack. Boise State continually pushed the action into the Nevada defensive half in the opening period searching for the go ahead strike.
The decisive moment came in the 23rd minute when Maureen Fitzgerald crossed the ball from deep on the right wing to a waiting Parks in front of the Nevada goal. The freshman volleyed the eventual game-winning goal in from six-yards out, inside the left post for the 1-0 lead at the 22:56 mark. It was Parks team-high ninth goal of the year, while Fitzgerald recorded her team-high seventh assist.
A few minutes later Brandy Hickcox sent a header off a corner kick toward goal that beat the keeper but was cleared by a defender at the left post. Shannon Saxton nearly extended Boise State’s advantage in the 39th minute when she launched a shot that hit the left post, the deflection was eventually cleared by a defender.
Boise State’s defense was big once again led by Ruiz in goal. The Broncos recorded their second consecutive shutout in the tournament to claim the title.

BOISE STATE’S PARKS RECEIVES NATIONAL WEEKLY HONOR Boise State freshman Erica Parks has been named to TopDrawerSoccer’s National Team of the Week for the week ending November 8. The Nampa, Idaho, native led the Broncos to their first Western Athletic Conference championship over the weekend recording a goal in each of Boise State’s three wins. Parks recorded the game-winners in the Broncos’ 1-0 victory over Utah State in Friday’s semifinal round and in their 1-0 win over Nevada in the championship match on Sunday. In addition to being named to the all-tournament team, she was named the WAC Tournament Most Valuable Player for her outstanding performance. This is the first time that a Boise State soccer player has been recognized by one of the national soccer publications/websites.
ALL WAC SOCCER HONORS ANNOUNCED The 2009 women’s soccer All-WAC teams were announced Wednesday night, as selected by the conferences nine head coaches. WAC regular season champion, San Jose State, led all teams with four players on the conference first team, as well as one on the second team.
